Serum Routine for Dry Skin: A Simple 5 Step Plan for Pakistani Skin
Serum Routine for Dry Skin: A Simple 5 Step Plan for Pakistani Skin
Dry skin feels tight, looks dull and flakes at the worst times. Wedding photos, Eid visits and office days all feel harder when your face feels like paper.
This serum routine for dry skin is built around one idea. Add water, then trap it. Everything else is detail.
Dry Skin or Dehydrated Skin? Try This Quick Test
Many people say "dry skin" when they mean dehydrated skin. The fix is not the same for both.
Wash your face with plain lukewarm water and wait 20 minutes. Do not apply anything.
- If your skin feels tight, rough and uncomfortable, it is likely dry. Dry skin does not make enough oil.
- If your skin feels tight but is also oily on the forehead and nose, it is likely dehydrated. That skin needs water, not more oil.
- If your skin flakes and cracks in patches, it is likely very dry. Be extra gentle and skip scrubs.
Another clue: dry skin feels the same all day. Dehydrated skin feels better right after a good moisturiser and tight again by evening. If you say "pet bhaari lagta hai" about your face, meaning it feels heavy and stretched, the dry test above will help you pick the right path.
Why the Usual Pakistani Routine Makes Dry Skin Worse
Most bathroom shelves here hold a face wash bar, a hot shower and maybe one cream. That set up strips dry skin daily. Common habits that cause trouble:
- Harsh soap bars. They have a high pH and remove the oils dry skin cannot spare.
- Very hot water. Long hot showers feel good in Karachi winters and hill station trips, but they dry the face further.
- Alcohol based toners. They sting and leave the face tighter than before.
- Serum with no moisturiser after it. This is the biggest mistake. More on this below.
- Air conditioning all day. Lahore and Karachi offices run AC for months, and indoor air pulls water from the skin.
- Skipping sunscreen. Sun and heat still dry the skin on cloudy winter days.
A better routine is not longer. It is gentler and better timed. If you want to compare options by skin type first, see our page on how to search by skin type.
A 5 Step Serum Routine for Dry Skin That Traps Water
Do these steps in this order. Order matters more than how many bottles you own.
Step 1: Cleanse gently, and only at night if skin is very dry
Use a mild cream cleanser or a syndet bar. Syndet means synthetic detergent. These are soap free and much gentler. In the morning, splash lukewarm water only. There is no need to scrub a face that has just been asleep.
Step 2: Apply a hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin
This is the core of the routine. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It draws water towards the skin surface. A good choice for this step is our Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, which uses hyaluronic acid with vitamin B5. Vitamin B5 is used in cosmetics for the look of soft, comfortable skin.
Always apply it while your face is still damp from washing or from a light mist of water. Three to four drops is enough. Pat, do not rub hard.
Patch test on your inner arm and wait 24 hours before the first full use. Keep it away from the eyes. Do not use it on children. If irritation does not settle, stop use and see a doctor.
Step 3: Put moisturiser on straight away
Within one minute of the serum, apply a rich cream with ceramides or glycerin. Do not wait for the serum to "dry fully". The point is to seal the water in while it is still there.
Look for shea butter, squalane or petrolatum in the list if your skin is very dry. These slow down water loss from the surface.
Step 4: Cream sunscreen in the morning
Use a cream or lotion sunscreen, not a matte or gel type. Cream formulas feel better on dry, tight skin. This is a must step. Sun exposure can make dryness and dullness look worse.
Step 5: Optional face oil at night, on top of moisturiser
Two or three drops of a plain facial oil over your night cream can add comfort. Put it last, never first. Oil before serum blocks the water from getting in.
If you use a vitamin C or retinol product at any point, morning sunscreen is even more important. You can see the full range of formulas in our active serums collection and pick textures that suit dry skin.
The Golden Rule for Hydrating Serums
Never use a hydrating serum on dry skin in dry air without a moisturiser on top.
This is the most common error we hear about. A humectant pulls water. In dry air, it can pull water out of the deeper skin layers and leave the surface drier than before. In Pakistani winters the air is dry, and AC rooms in summer feel the same.
So the rule is simple. Damp skin, then serum, then cream, always together. If you only remember one line from this guide, remember that one.
For the full layering order across serums, read our guide on how to layer serums. For a deeper look at one ingredient, see hyaluronic acid serum for dry skin.
Weekly Routine Table: Summer vs Winter in Pakistan
Textures should change with the season. The steps stay the same.
| Step | Summer (April to September) | Winter (November to February) |
|---|---|---|
| Morning cleanse | Lukewarm water only | Lukewarm water only |
| Serum | 2 to 3 drops of hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin | 3 to 4 drops on very damp skin, plus a drop of face oil mixed in |
| Moisturiser | Light lotion with glycerin | Rich ceramide cream |
| Sunscreen | Cream sunscreen, one layer | Cream sunscreen, reapply if outdoors long |
| Night cleanse | Gentle cream cleanser | Cream cleanser or syndet bar only |
| Night serum | Hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin | Hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin |
| Night moisturiser | Lotion | Rich night cream, plus 2 to 3 drops of face oil on top |
| Weekly extra | None | One mild cream mask at night, no scrub |
Monsoon months in Karachi and coastal areas add humidity. Use lighter textures then. Northern areas and Islamabad winters are drier, so richer creams help more. More season advice is in our winter skincare routine guide.
Still Tight? Add This Before Adding More Serums
If your skin still feels tight after one serum and one cream, the answer is a thicker moisturiser, not a second serum.
Change one thing at a time. Buy a richer night cream first and use it for one week. If tightness remains, then try adding a few drops of facial oil at night. Only after both steps, consider adding another serum to the routine.
Adding three new serums at once makes it hard to know what helped and what caused a reaction. Slow changes also protect your budget, because skincare should not need a new bottle every ten days.
What Not to Do With Dry, Flaky Skin
Flaky skin on face is tempting to fix by force. Do not do these things.
- Do not scrub the flakes. Scrubs and washcloths create tiny tears and more flaking a day later.
- Do not put lemon juice, toothpaste or kitchen vinegar on your face. These can irritate badly.
- Do not switch products every week. Give any simple routine at least three to four weeks before judging it.
- Do not use strong retinol or high strength acids while your skin is cracked and stinging. These are best started on calm, comfortable skin.
- Do not skip moisturiser because your skin "feels oily in summer". Dry skin still needs a lighter cream.
- Do not use unlabelled creams from social media sellers. If a product is a supplement or a cream, check that the seller is registered and verifiable before buying.
When to See a Doctor
Cosmetic care helps the look and feel of dry skin. It is not medical treatment. Book a visit to a dermatologist if you notice any of the following:
- Skin that cracks, bleeds or hurts to touch
- Strong itching that keeps you awake
- Sudden, very dry skin with no clear reason
- Red, scaly patches, or skin that oozes or crusts
- Dryness on other parts of the body as well
- No change after four weeks of a gentle routine
Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis need medical care. A serum is a cosmetic product and never a medicine. It cannot treat or cure any skin condition.
FAQ
What is the best serum routine for dry skin in Pakistan?
Cleanse gently at night, apply a hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin, then a rich moisturiser straight away. In the morning, use a cream sunscreen. Keep the same steps in summer and winter, and only change the texture of your cream.
Should I use serum on damp or dry skin?
Always damp. A humectant serum works with water that is already on the skin. On dry skin in dry air it can leave your face feeling tighter.
How many serums do I need for dry skin?
One is usually enough to start. A hyaluronic acid serum covers the main need. Add anything else only if your skin still feels tight after a richer moisturiser.
Can I use face oil instead of moisturiser?
Face oil works best over a moisturiser, not instead of one. Oil helps slow water loss, but it does not add water to the skin.
Why does my skin flake even after using cream?
Flaking often comes from harsh soap, hot water or scrubbing. Fix the cleanser and the water temperature first. If flakes continue after four weeks, see a doctor.
Is dry skin in winter in Pakistan different from dry skin in summer?
Yes, the air is drier in winter, and heaters make it worse. In summer, AC rooms can dry the skin too. The routine stays the same, but winter needs a richer cream and sometimes a face oil at night.
